Welsh hospitals foresee need for many more pharmacists by 2010

National Health Service hospitals in Wales expect to need a 62 per cent increase in the number of pharmacists they employ by 2010.

The National Assembly for Wales's Health and Social Services Committee was told on 5 December that hospital pharmacy staffing needs were expected to rise from 320 pharmacist posts at the end of 2000 to 517 in 2010. Increases in staff numbers of between 42 and 88 per cent were forecast for preregistration trainees, pharmacy technicians, student technicians and pharmacy support staff. The greatest increase, 88 per cent, was for preregistration trainees. At the end of 2000 there were 16 preregistration posts at Welsh hospitals. This was expected to rise to 30 by 2010.

The increases were set out in papers presented to the committee, setting out the implications for staffing of a workforce review.

The papers show that only 167 of the 197 extra pharmacists needed will be provided through hospital preregistration placements within Wales.
