School of Pharmacy to study Mediterranean nutraceuticals

Olives form part of the Mediterranean diet. Rural plant extracts will be studied for health effects

Consumption of fruit, vegetables and oils is generally higher in southern European countries and has been dubbed "the Mediterranean diet". Now the School of Pharmacy, University of London, is to lead a research project looking at the role of local food products in this diet and the links with chronic diseases.

Professor Michael Heinrich, Centre for Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy, School of Pharmacy, is to lead a European team of around 12 researchers studying extracts from plants traditionally used in rural communities in southern Italy, Greece and Spain. The extracts will be studied for potential antioxidant, antidiabetic and memory-mediating effects.

Three researchers, including the project manager, will be based at the School of Pharmacy. Other partners include the University of Murcia, Spain, the University of Frankfurt, Germany, the University of Milan, Italy, Harokopio University, Greece, and F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, Switzerland. Funding of e1.58m (£982,000) has been granted by the European Union for the three-year project.
