Pharmacies should accept euros, the NPA advises
Community pharmacies should accept payments in euros
if they are asked to, the National Pharmaceutical Association is advising
its members.
"The euro is here to stay," the NPA says in the
January issue of its Supplement. "In tourist or cross-channel port
regions, to refuse to take euros may significantly affect your sales.
Put a sign in your window saying 'Euros accepted here'."
The NPA says that pharmacies should set their own
exchange rate for accepting euros to allow a margin to cover costs. With
the euro currently worth around 62p it suggests a rate of 55p. A notice
of the exchange rate needs to be displayed instore. Only notes should
be accepted and change should be given in sterling. Notes should be exchanged
at banks when a sufficient number have been accumulated so as to avoid
high minimum charges on foreign exchange transactions.
