New CRC standard

A new British Standard specifying requirements and testing procedures for non-reclosable child-resistant packages for pharmaceutical products was published on 21 December 2001 (BS 8404:2001 Packaging — child-resistant packaging — requirements and testing procedures for non-reclosable packages for pharmaceutical products).

With the introduction of this British Standard, there now exist specifications for both reclosable (BS EN 28317:1993) and non-reclosable (BS 8404) child-resistant packaging for medicines.

In time, it is likely that child safety regulations will be amended to require that, for specified drug substances, unit packages used by manufacturers must comply with the new BS 8404.
