CPPE to run NHS Direct training

The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education is to undertake training of pharmacists and nurses at NHS Direct ahead of callers being referred to community pharmacies. It has appointed its first full-time tutor and a new assistant director to carry out the work.

Janice Mason-Duff, MRPharmS, will work as the tutor with assistant director, Matthew Shaw, MRPharmS, on developing training for NHS Direct. Two pharmacists and two nurses will be attached to each site in England to provide training to the nurses who run the service.

Community pharmacists in England are to be sent a booklet about NHS Direct and the pharmacy referral option. The booklet aims to give the background to why pharmacy referral has been introduced and how pharmacists can turn this to their advantage.

Ms Mason-Duff and Mr Shaw will also be working with pharmacists involved in the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee's medicines management pilots.
