Second wave of MM pilots announced

A further 40 pharmacy-based medicines management pilots have been announced by the Department of Health. Each will get funding of up to £75,000 this year.

Hazel Blears, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health said on 12 February: "These new pilot sites are helping us to reach our target, set out in the NHS plan, for a medicines management service in every primary care group and trust by 2004. Everyone wins with medicines management. Patients get better help and better care, the NHS makes better use of its resources and professionals make better use of their skills."

The Department of Health said that early results from the first 26 pilots, launched last July (PJ, 21 July 2001, p75) suggest that patients are already seeing benefits. They are having regular medicines reviewed more often to make sure that they get the right medicines at the right time.
