NICE issues first of a series of guidelines for type 2 diabetesPeople with type 2 diabetes should have an eye examination and their kidney function tested at least once a year, according to guidance from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence published this week. The guidance also recommends that people at high risk of renal disease should be prescribed angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, where appropriate, to manage their blood pressure. The guidelines are two of a series of five on type 2 diabetes. Other guidelines in the series, due to be published later this year, cover the management of renal disease, dyslipidaemia and blood pressure, and blood glucose. NICE is currently inviting comments on its final draft guideline "Management of type 2 diabetes glycaemic control". Comments can be sent via email to glycaemic@nice.nhs.uk. Copies of the full guidelines and the NICE short form guidelines are available on the NICE website (www.nice.org.uk), and on the National Electronic Library for Health's website (www.nelh.nhs.uk). Copies are also available from the National Health Service response line, tel 0870 1555 455, reference N0058 (retinopathy) and N0061 (renal).
