Treat with aspirin soon after acute MI

Patients treated with aspirin soon after experiencing an acute myocardial infarction (MI) have lower mortality than those treated at a later stage, say researchers from Israel.

The researchers analysed survival data for 1,200 patients treated with thrombolytic agents. They found that those given aspirin before thrombolysis experienced lower mortality seven days post-MI — 2.5 per cent of early users had died compared with 6.0 per cent of late users (P=0.01) (American Journal of Cardiology 2002;89:381).
