Panel to distribute global funds to fight AIDS, TB and malaria

An international panel of experts has been set up by the World Health Organization's Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to make recommendation on how US$700m–US$800m should be spent this year.

The three diseases are responsible for six million deaths a year — one in 10 world-wide. The extra money will increase global spending on the conditions by about 50 per cent.

The panel, which has 17 members, was selected from 700 nominees. The fund is a public-private partnership working to increase global resources to combat the three diseases, to direct those resources where they are needed most and to ensure that they are used effectively across national boundaries.
