ViATIM winning in hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines trial

New interim data from a direct comparative study of two combined hepatitis A and typhoid fever vaccines, ViATIM and Hepatyrix, show that ViATIM achieved a superior response rate in patients 14 days after vaccination. Protection against typhoid fever was achieved in 82 per cent of patients who received ViATIM compared with 58 per cent of patients who received Hepatyrix. For hepatitis A, seroconversion was achieved in 99 and 82 per cent of patients for ViATIM and Hepatyrix, respectively.

Both vaccines were well tolerated although more local and systemic reactions were seen in patients receiving ViATIM. The data were presented at the British Travel Health Association conference in London earlier this month.
