Community pharmacy

What about confidentiality and discretion?

From Mr C. Morris, MRPharmS

I am writing with regard to the new "openness of pharmacy" that everyone seems to be pushing for.

I am a locum pharmacist and I work in two newly designed pharmacies which resemble overlarge goldfish bowls. When I work in these dispensaries, I wonder if the new openness just means a lack of confidentiality. When dispensing prescriptions for well publicised and potentially embarrassing items, eg, Viagra, Levonelle or even Anusol, I must try to find a corner to hide in so I cannot be seen.

A major part of our profession involves confidentiality and discretion. Supposed professionals should not be seen to run into a corner to protect a patient's rights.

Chris Morris
Newquay, Cornwall
