Council elections

Still saddled with the single transferable vote?

From Mr M. Crane, MRPharmS

The season of election of members to Council will shortly be upon us, and already the nomination notices have appeared in The Journal. A question arises as to the voting system which will be employed. At the moment, the system used is the not very popular single transferable vote. As a result of concern from the branches, the Council agreed to consider the options but instead referred the matter to the modernisation group with a rider that if a change in the system was required it would be in place for the 2002 elections. Since nothing has been heard from the modernisation group are we still going to be saddled with the single transferable vote?

Malcolm Crane
Rye, East Sussex

PHILIP GREEN, project director for the modernisation programme, replies:

The Council considered the election procedure at its meeting in October 2001 (PJ, 13 October 2001, p530) and agreed that any changes should be deferred pending the outcome of the review planned under the Society's modernisation programme. There was, however, no undertaking that any change in the procedure would be in place for the 2002 election. This would not have been a practical aim because there are other important issues to be considered first. The modernisation steering group is currently seeking views on the future remit and functions of the Society. Consideration of the future composition and responsibilities of the Council, and the method of election or appointment of Council members, will follow.
