Market growth sees UniChem profits rise

Alliance UniChem Plc reported an 18 per cent increase in pre-tax profits on 20 March, saying that health care markets in Europe were continuing in a long-term trend of strong inherent growth.

For the year to 31 December 2001, the company made profits of £159m on a turnover of £7.3bn.

The company now has over 1,000 retail outlets, including 767 Moss pharmacies and 67 non-pharmacy premises in the United Kingdom. It now has sizable pharmacy chains in Norway, the Netherlands and Italy. The retail group made an operating profit of £56.4m on sales of £720m. The effects of the ending of resale price maintenance in the UK were "minimal".
