Six research studentships created

Six special research studentships have been created by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in recognition of the excellence of research in some schools of pharmacy.

The EPSRC chemistry programme is offering designated pharmacy CASE awards (Co-operative Awards in Science and Engineering) to pharmacy departments it currently supports. Two awards go to the University of Nottingham school of pharmaceutical sciences and one each go to the School of Pharmacy, University of London, and the pharmacy schools of Bradford, Brighton and Strathclyde universities.

CASE awards are designed to support research students working on one- to three-year projects that are jointly devised and supervised by the academic department and a co-operating body in the public or private sector. The academic department receives a standard research studentship and converts it into a CASE award by finding a suitable partner. The partner supplements the student's EPSRC award by at least £3,000 a year and contributes £1,400 a year to the academic department. In return, it benefits by drawing on university expertise and facilities to help solve research, design or manufacturing problems.
