Compliance aids

Pharmacists need payment

From Dr M. Hepden, MRCP

I write as a hard pressed general practitioner in an attempt to move forward the impasse of prescribing medicines in multicompartment compliance aids. No one seems willing or able to take on the task of changing the remuneration system for the community pharmacist.

We have an epidemic of elderly ill and mentally incompetent patients who benefit from such compliance aids and we are forced to issue weekly prescriptions, often for 12 tablets, thus signing up to 12 prescriptions per month because only four items fit on a prescription.

Patients need this service and pharmacists need adequate payment, but the last thing the GP needs is the vast amount of paperwork required.

Mary Hepden
Nottingham
