S-Enantiomer of citalopram effective for depression

Escitalopram, the S-enantiomer of citalopram, is effective and well tolerated for the treatment of depression, a new study shows.

Researchers randomly assigned 380 patients with major depressive disorder to receive either escitalopram 10mg daily or placebo, for eight weeks. An improvements was seen from the second week onwards in the escitalopram treatment group. The study was published in International Clinical Psychopharmacology 2002;17:95).

Lundbeck, manufacturer of escitalopram, expects to launch the antidepressant in the United Kingdom within the next two months.
