Factor Xa inhibitor well tolerated

DX-9065a, an anticoagulant that selectively and reversibly inhibits factor Xa, is well tolerated in patients with stable coronary artery disease, researchers report.

In a trial of 73 patients, 58 received one of four different doses of DX-9065a administered over 72 hours, and 15 received placebo. Only minor bleeding occurred. The researchers conclude: "Specific targeting of factor Xa is a biologically appealing consideration for pharmacological therapy in thrombotic disorders of the cardiovascular system." (Circulation 2002;105:2384.)

DX-9065a has previously been compared with unfractionated heparin in patients undergoing angioplasty (PJ, 6 April, p458).
