New asthma treatment promising

A leukocyte suppressing anti-inflammatory drug (LSAID) for the treatment of asthma has shown promising results in a phase II trial.

Researchers randomly assigned patients with mild asthma to receive either IPL576,092 (at one of two doses) or placebo, given twice daily for seven days followed by exposure to dust mite, cat dander or grass pollen. A crossover between the drug and placebo was also performed. Relative to placebo, IPL576,092 improved airway hyper-reactivity and was well tolerated.

The drug is being developed by Aventis Pharma and Inflazyme Pharmaceuticals.
