CPD

What is it all about?

From Dr R. J. Harman, MRPharmS

Call me a cynic, but I thought that continuing professional development was all about enhancing one's knowledge as a professional for the benefit of patients and proving that one had reached a satisfactory professional standard to be worthy to continue in practice. Not so.

The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education issues "records of completion" for all modules that it offers for continuing professional development. It issues "certificates of completion" for only two: the "home away from home" module and the "patient medication records" module. This is because, and I quote the CPPE, "they have implications for remuneration." Completion of all other modules is deemed less worthy of a certificate, it seems.

Try proving that to the inspectors when they ask for proof of the continuing professional development one has undertaken to enable one to remain on the register.

Robin J. Harman
Farnham, Surrey
