Tribute

Coville In a tribute to the late Peter Francis Coville, BRIAN IRVINE, Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Association council member for the Pacific region, writes:

It is with sadness I report the death of Professor Peter Coville, former dean of the University of Otago school of pharmacy, who died peacefully at his Dunedin home on April 18 after a long illness. He was 57. Peter trained at the University of London and continued research in corticosteroids to gain his PhD. He moved to New Zealand in 1973 as a lecturer at the school of pharmacy at the Central Institute of Technology and took over as head of the school in 1976. In 1985 he was secretary and registrar of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand, a position he held until his appointment as professor and head of the department of pharmacy at the Otago University in 1989. In 1991 he was appointed dean until 1999, which was maximum tenure for such a position. A week before his death Peter learned he had been appointed emeritus professor.

In 1993 Peter was awarded fellowship of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. He was made a fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand in 1996 and received the Society's gold medal in 2000.

Peter was involved in numerous committees and working parties including the National Council on AIDS. He had a special interest in comprehensive pharmaceutical care and the New Zealand College of Pharmacists and was made an honorary fellow of the college in 1998.

John Shaw, professor of pharmacy at the Auckland school of pharmacy, officiated at the funeral service on 24 April, which was well attended by past and current students, pharmacists and university staff and friends. Peter will be sadly missed, which was evidenced by the many references to him at the recent pharmacy conference. His contribution to pharmacy education in New Zealand was enormous.
