Scottish Executive election: Candidates' biographies

We have been supplied with the following biographies of candidates for election to the Executive of the Scottish Department of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. There are six vacancies. Voting papers have been issued and must be returned by 4pm on Wednesday, 12 June.

Professor Christine Bond, BPharm, PhD, MRPharmS, HonMFPHM. Has worked for Glaxo Research Laboratories. Had extensive locum community pharmacist experience. Now professor of primary care at University of Aberdeen, with interests in the role of pharmacy, in optimising effective use of medicines (prescribed and over-the-counter) and contributing to the wider primary health care agenda. She is seconded part time to NHS Grampian as consultant in pharmaceutical public health. Committee member of the Society's Aberdeen and North East Scottish branch and member of the Scottish Executive since 1999.

John I. S. Duncan Graduated from Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology in 1983. Completed my preregistration training with Boots in Fife and held managerial positions with Boots in Fife, East Anglia and Tayside 1984–93. Between 1994 and 1998 I worked with two independent community pharmacies in the Carlisle area before joining the Perth city-centre branch of W. Davidson & Sons Ltd of Blairgowrie. I am currently vice-chairman of the Society's Dundee and Eastern Scotland branch. I am married with two children.

Maurice R. Hickey, BSc (Hons), MBA, MRPharmS, FRSA, of Forres, Morayshire. Registered in 1982. Community pharmacy contractor, Forres, since 2000. Pharmacist member of Moray LHCC core management group. PR spokesperson, Society's Moray and Banff branch. Previously, contractor in Plymouth, Devon 1991–2000. Locum 1989–91. Full-time MBA, Strathclyde Graduate Business School. 1988–89 community pharmacist. 1984–88 hospital pharmacist. Past chairman, secretary and PRO, Plymouth branch. NPA spokesman.

Professor Clare A. Mackie, professor of pharmaceutical care and head of Centre for Partnership in Medicines for Health (since 2002). Director of WHO Centre Pharmaceutical Care and Curriculum Development (since 1999). Member of Multicentre Research Ethics Committee (MREC) for Scotland (since 2001). Member of forum on pharmacist prescribing (since 2001). External examiner, School of Pharmacy, University of London (since 1999). External examiner, School of Pharmacy, University of West Indies (since 1999). Community pharmacy contractor, Greater Glasgow Health Board (since 1984).

Edward J. H. Mallinson, LLM, MRPharmS, FRPharmS, FIMgt, FRSH, HonMFPHM, of Bothwell, registered in 1973. Specialist in pharmaceutical public health, Lanarkshire since 1984. Formerly district pharmaceutical officer, Tayside HB, 1978–83. Member of Scottish Executive since 2000. Society Charter silver medallist 2001. Secretary and treasurer, Lanarkshire branch, since 1984. Formerly secretary, Dundee and Eastern Scottish branch, social secretary and secretary, Bradford branch. Member of the Pharmacy Law and Ethics Association Committee. Treasurer to the BPC in 1996. Society nominee member of the National Appeal Panel since 1987. Scottish Nominee on Society's Modernisation Steering Group.

Rose Marie Parr, BSc(Hons), MSc, MRPharmS. Currently director of the Scottish Centre for Post Qualification Pharmaceutical Education (SCPPE), the National CE provider for NHS pharmacists in Scotland. She is a national specialist for post qualification education and is currently a member of CRAG and chairman of the National Pharmaceutical Forum. Previous hospital pharmacy employment positions include senior pharmacist in Forth Valley and Lanarkshire Health Board areas. Former member and chairman of Forth Valley APC.

Ronald A. Shiels, of Inverness, registered in 1970. Proprietor pharmacist of single community pharmacy. Member of Highland APC since 1983 and former chairman. Member of Highland Pharmacy Practices Committee since 1987. Member of the National Appeal Panel for entry to pharmaceutical list. Former secretary, currently chairman of Highland Pharmacy Contractors Committee. Member of the Scottish Executive since 1988. Member of the SPGC since 1986 and its standing committee since 1989, currently vice-chairman. Member of the SPF executive council since April 1998.

David A. M. Thomson, BScPharm, MRPharmS, LFHom, ACPP, of Lenzie, Glasgow. Member of the Scottish Executive since 1996 and current vice-chairman. Director of pharmacy, Primary Care Trust, Greater Glasgow. Committee member and immediate past chair, Glasgow and West of Scotland branch. Member, National Pharmacy Forum. Greater Glasgow Area Pharmaceutical Committee. Editorial board, Pharmacy Management; Vaccine Strategy Group for Scotland; Vice-chairman, Association of Scottish Trust Chief Pharmacists primary care group. Past SCPPE national tutor and member of the PQE Board.

Angela Timoney, MSc, MPH, MRPharmS of Broughty Ferry, registered in Britain in 1987. Registered in Northern Ireland in 1984 and subsequently worked in Ireland and overseas. Currently Specialist in Pharmaceutical Public Health, NHS Tayside. Recently appointed Vice-chairman of the Scottish Medicines Consortium, the National Pharmaceutical Forum and the Scottish Specialists in Pharmaceutical Public Health. Member of Scottish Ambulance Service professional advisory committee. Honorary lecturer, University of Strathclyde. Chair of SIGN dyspepsia guideline group. Previously pharmaceutical prescribing adviser in Greater Glasgow and Tayside. Member of Society's Scottish Executive since 1998.

Noel Wicks, BPharm (Hons), MRPharmS, Aged 24, registered in 2000. I am a 24-year-old independent community pharmacist proprietor based at The Campus Pharmacy at the University of Stirling. I had the pleasure of spending four years on the committee of the British Pharmaceutical Students' Association ending as the President for 2000–01 and am currently the chairman of the Young Pharmacists' Group. The Campus Pharmacy and I were recently awarded the overall winner of the Unichem Great Business Awards.
