NICE determination on ovarian cancer treatment open for appeal

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence has issued a final appraisal determination on pegylated liposomal doxorubicin hydrochloride (Caelyx). The document was sent to formal consultees this week and any appeals have to be made by 29 May.

The NICE opinion, which is likely to form the basis of guidance unless appeals are successfully lodged, states: "Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin hydrochloride is recommended as one option for the second-line (or subsequent) treatment of women with advanced ovarian cancer that is initially resistant or refractory to first-line platinum-based combination therapy or has become resistant after successive courses of platinum-based combination therapy."

Glivec NICE has also issued a consultation document for its appraisal on imatinib (Glivec) for chronic myeloid leukaemia. The document summarises the evidence considered so far and does not constitute final guidance. The initial verdict is that imatinib is recommended for the treatment of accelerated phase chronic myeloid leukaemia but not in the chronic or blast-crisis phases. Comments can be made on the NICE website (www.nice.org.uk) until 4 June 2002.
