Scottish prescribing pilot extended

More pharmacists in Scotland will be able to prescribe medicines for minor ailments following a further extension of a pilot project.

The direct supply of medicines project was originally piloted in two locations: Arbroath in Angus and Patna in Ayrshire (PJ, 23 February, p238). Ken Penman, the project co-ordinator in Arbroath, told The Journal that the project will be extended to cover the whole of Tayside by October 2003.

Last month it was announced that it would also be expanded across Ayrshire and Arran (PJ, 27 April, p558). The Scottish strategy for pharmaceutical care states that the project should be introduced across Scotland by 2005.
