Scottish cancer patients hold palliative care notes

Cancer patients being treated at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, Glasgow, are being given their own palliative care notes to show to other health care professionals from whom they seek treatment.

The notes contain body illustrations on which patients can mark where their pain occurs and a list of all the professionals caring for them with their comments and guidance on 24-hour pain relief.

A spokesman for the hospice said that the notes were useful for patients who were on holiday or away from their normal place of care and gave details of medication and contacts for health care professionals to use.

The palliative integrated care pathway project has been funded for three years as part of the Scottish cancer plan and is to be extended across the west of Scotland.
