Two new members elected to Council

Gerald Alexander and Clive Jackson have been elected to the Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to replace David Allen and Alan Nathan, both of whom who chose not to seek re-election.

Digby Emson, Christine Glover, Dr Gillian Hawksworth, Pat Hoare and Hemant Patel were all re-elected.

Mr Alexander is a community pharmacist from Southgate, London. He is a board member of the National Pharmaceutical Association and a member of the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee.

Mr Jackson is director of the NHS National Prescribing Centre and a former regional pharmaceutical adviser. He is a governor of the College of Pharmacy Practice.

The nine unsuccessful candidates were Roy Carrington, Dr Shaqil Chaudary, Dr Sarah Cockbill, Robert Darracott, Professor William Dawson, Bob Gartside, Peter Schofield, Ashok Soni and Philip Walton.

Of the 44,405 voting papers issued, 8938 were returned (457 fewer than in 2001) and 90 were disallowed as invalid. The percentage of voting papers returned was 20.1, compared with 21.2 in 2001 and 19.6 per cent in both 2000 and 1999.

In the three-yearly election of the Society's five auditors, Anthony Cox has replaced Mervyn Madge, who was unsuccessful in the election. Mr Cox is adverse drug reaction pharmacist at the West Midlands Centre for Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting. John E. Balmford, Ian Caldwell, Richard Clitherow and Dr Brian Wills were re-elected as auditors.
