Call for members to join sciences academy

From Professor H. N. E. Stevens, FRPharmS

May I, through your columns, address the many pharmacists who were previously members of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Pharmaceutical Sciences Group — the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Great Britain (APSGB) — by virtue of simply having ticked a box on the Society's membership renewal form. That privilege expired on 31 December 2001 and membership lapsed. To regain membership of the academy it is now necessary to join.

The academy is a fully independent legal entity, but works closely with the Society. It needs the support of all those interested in the pharmaceutical sciences to ensure that as the Society considers its future modernisation strategy, science remains firmly at the top of the agenda. The academy is represented on the Society's science and conference committees and on a partnership committee, whose role is to facilitate the relationship between the two organisations. The academy works closely with the Society in many other ways, eg, by nominating the British Pharmaceutical Conference science chairman and working with him or her to develop the science content of the conference, as well as organising many joint scientific meetings during the year. Those who join the academy are entitled to participate fully in the science programmes and discussion workshops organised by the academy. They may also attend (at no cost) the academy's annual black-tie dinner, this year to be held on 24 September, during the BPC. Membership is open to all those with an interest in the pharmaceutical sciences, whether members of Society or not.

The process of joining is easy: simply download and complete the membership form from the academy website (www.apsgb.org) or send an e-mail to the secretariat (apsgb@associationhq.org.uk), or write to me.

Chairman, Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Great Britain,
