The Society

Branch Representatives' meeting summary

Referral of STV decision deplored

The meeting carried a motion deploring the Council's decision to refer to its modernisation steering group a decision on replacing the single transferable vote (STV) system for the election of Council members.

ROGER MILLS (Slough) said that three consecutive BRMs had confirmed that the will of the membership was to get rid of STV. The argument had already been won. The object of the motion was to ensure that the Council discussed the topic again.

Dr ANGELA ALEXANDER (Slough), seconding the motion, said that the Society was becoming more remote from its members and the Council was contributing to that by not listening to the views of the BRM.

ANTHONY HARRIS (Great Yarmouth and Waveney) said that he was in favour of the STV system. He voted every year and saw nothing wrong with it. The main problem was membership apathy, not the election system used.
