Pharmacists feature in honours list
Three pharmacists received honours for services to pharmacy and the National Health Service in the Queen's Birthday Honours list, published on 15 June. Beth Taylor is appointed OBE for her services to the NHS. Ms Taylor is a member of the NHS Modernisation Board and is community pharmacy services team manager at Southwark Primary Care Trust. She has worked in hospital and primary care pharmacy in south London and has been involved with many service developments, including nurse prescribing, NHS Direct and emergency contraception projects. Ms Taylor said: "I am delighted and very proud to receive this award. It confirms that the contribution that pharmacists can make to the changing NHS is highly valued." She hoped that all her colleagues would see the award as a recognition of their importance within the NHS. Dr Gillian Hawksworth, Vice-President of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, becomes MBE for her services to pharmacy in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. The Vice-President said that she was pleased that the award recognised her contribution to the local community over the past 25 years. "Many pharmacists are unsung heroes in their own communities," she said. An MBE was also awarded to Veni Harania, chairman of Nucare, for services to pharmacy. Mr Harania said that he was thrilled with the award and the recognition that it gave to Nucare and the independent community pharmacy sector. Mr Harania has recently taken up the position of executive chairman of Nucare and has been succeeded as managing director by Mahesh Shah. Two figures in the pharmaceutical industry are also honoured. Dr Tom McKillop, chief executive of AstraZeneca, receives a knighthood and Brian Cass, managing director of Huntingdon Life Sciences, becomes CBE. |
