NPA should open membership to all pharmacists

As an ex-proprietor and now part-time self-employed locum I have watched the dilemma of pharmacy practice in this country for many years.

May I make a suggestion that could improve all pharmacists in all aspects of practice. The suggestion is that the Royal Pharmaceutical Society remains as it is, tied to the legal system, and that the National Pharmaceutical Association changes its status and opens its membership to all pharmacists thus creating a similar situation to the doctors' General Medical Council and British Medical Association. The NPA would then have the clout to get all pharmacists a decent remuneration. I have been informed by my solicitor that he charges £150 per hour. I charge about £17.50.

We are living in serious and responsible times for pharmacy as evidenced by the discussion, comments and opinions in the PJ. The professional versus regulatory role for the Society, its relationship with the state and Government constitution and planning a new Council are but a few vital matters. Much thought and study is required, but before weariness creeps in, let us remember that we are in exciting and exhilarating times. We are creating new concepts and laying the foundation for the future of the profession. We can discuss, argue, fight for, inspire, listen and promulgate old and new ideas.

Let us make use of this opportunity, something which our colleagues in future years will not have. A heavy duty rests on our shoulders; let us acquit ourselves well.
