Superdrug fish oil removed from sale

The Food Standards Agency has asked Superdrug Stores Plc to remove a batch of its Pure Cod Liver Oil liquid (batch number 300909, expiry date April 2003) from sale following the agency's survey of dioxins in fish oil supplements.

Of the 33 brands investigated, two contained levels of dioxins that when taken at the recommended dose would provide more than double the limit set by the Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment.

New European legislation setting limits for levels comes into force on 1 July (PJ, 13 April, p490), after which it will be an offence to put fish oil supplements that contain dioxins at concentrations higher than the EU limit on the market.
