Tributes

Lawson In a tribute to the late Judith Rosslyn Lawson, née Davis (PJ, 1 June, p787), NOEL BAUMBER writes:

It came as a great shock to the members of Lincolnshire Local Pharmaceutical Committee to learn of the premature death of Judith Lawson who had been a focal, vocal and vivacious member of the committee for a decade until 1997.

Judith was born in Sydney, Australia, and was educated at Sydney University, but spent most of her career in pharmacy in the United Kingdom after meeting her future husband, Duncan, in London in 1970.

Judith managed Alf Dorman’s pharmacy in Red Lion Square, Stamford, and eventually bought the business in 1986. Stamford falls uniquely at the rural corners of four counties and in subsequent years community pharmacies in the town suffered innumerable challenges from urban surgeries wanting to dispense for their rural patients.

Legislation also made it impossible to claim payment for the services that Judith developed and provided in nursing homes outside Lincolnshire. Because of Judith’s depth of feeling for the injustices in the system, the LPC appointed her as community pharmacy representative for Lincolnshire on the family health services authority where she could influence events with her characteristic passion and enthusiasm.

As the demography of Stamford changed with schemes to relocate the local surgeries, Judith worked hard with the LPC to make the developments fair and logical. However, in 1997 she was forced to close what had been the oldest continuously operating pharmacy in the country and rely on her restaurant and photographic business interests.

Judith’s professional and caring attitude endeared her to many. Mourners at her funeral included friends from France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Germany as well as her family from Australia. She leaves her husband and two children, Alexander and Camilla.

Morgan In a tribute to the late Stanley Morgan, GERALD FOX writes:

Stanley Morgan had recently celebrated his 90th birthday. I had known him as a colleague and dear friend since 1965, when we owned pharmacies a few hundred yards apart.

When he sold his business in 1973 he continued working as a locum doing regular days for me until a few years ago when he officially retired.

He was devoted to our profession and his efforts were recognised with his Society fellowship. He was a most courteous, erudite and diligent person and always a pleasure to be with either at work or socially.

He will be sadly missed. Hilary and I extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Marian and daughters Jane and Sarah.
