TributeHanford In a tribute to the late David Martyn Hanford, GLYN HARRIS writes: I knew David Hanford as a close friend and mentor for over 40 years. His father Andy was a pharmacist, as is his widow Jean, and in some respects he was instrumental in me also becoming a pharmacist. After qualifying he worked for a short time in Swansea General Hospital and then joined his father Andy and his wife Jean in running a community pharmacy, first in Llansamlet and then at Peniel Green, Swansea. Dave was never a man to allow grass to grow under his feet and very much moved with the times. He was obliged to move premises twice in his career and made an enormous success of each move. A kind man, he was always willing to help others, not only his fellow pharmacists but patients and customers alike. He was a very popular retail pharmacist. Outside of his family and the practice of pharmacy the great love of his life was birds — ornithology and bird watching in particular. I was privileged to work as a locum for him on several occasions as he toured many parts of the world in the search of birds in their native habitat. I have only recently finished reading his account of his trek last year in Irian Jaya, where he went to seek out birds of paradise. For Dave it was fitting that he should see this before dying. Dave was a quiet and friendly man who took nothing for granted and had many friends in many walks of life. He will be sadly missed by many people and our thoughts and prayers go out to his widow Jean, daughter Jane and son Ian. The funeral was on Monday 22 July at Llansamlet Parish Church and Margam Crematorium. |
