ModernisationPsychological management theoriesFrom Mrs E. Barrie, MRPharmS Bob Gartside (PJ, 17 August, p217) suggests reasons why pharmacists no longer wish to work at the profession they entered with such high hopes, and proposes that the profession is engaging in displacement activity instead of tackling the manpower shortage. Mr Gartside will also no doubt be aware that if those with vision and hope for the future make suggestions for, and put in effort to achieve, sustainable improvement, there are always others who resist and ensure it never happens. There is probably a classic psychologist's theory for this activity, as there must also be for the converse process of working together for the greater good. Let us hope that there is a rosy future out there for patients, clients, consumers, pharmacists, and other health and social care providers alike. May I wish all enthusiastic pharmacists the very best of success and satisfaction in their work, as they strive to improve health. Erica Barrie |
