TributeCoxon In a tribute to the late Arthur Antony Coxon (PJ, 10 August, p200), VICTOR HAMMOND writes: Tony Coxon was one of a number of pharmacists who wished to serve with the Royal Army Medical Corps during the 1939–1945 war, but his technical skills resulted in him serving instead with the Royal Corps of Signals. The following details, extracted from our correspondence, give an outline of his service, including reference to other colleagues with a similar wartime service: "... at call up [I] was told there were no real vacancies in RAMC so opted for Royal Corps of Signals and enlisted for basic training in 1942". From May to October that year he underwent technical training at Huddersfield Technical College. "There were at least two other pharmacists at Huddersfield Technical College while I was there, both training to be instrument mechanics. I passed Trade Test Group A III as an instrument mechanic and after embarkation leave was posted to Algiers mid December 1942." In January 1943 Tony was posted to a Royal Signals section attached to HQ 23rd Army, Royal Artillery Field Regiment. He stayed with this unit until the end of the Italian campaign. He reclassified as a radio mechanic (Lance Corporal) and early in 1946 was posted to Athens, as part of 13 Division Signals, and promoted to Corporal. When he was demobilised after the end of the war, he joined Boots The Chemists at its branch in Bedworth, Coventry, which badly needed a "qualified dispenser and relief manager". |
