Exemption from unit pricing comes under Euro-scrutiny

Retaining the exemption for small shops from displaying unit prices is under review by the European Commission.

Unit pricing allows consumers to compare prices of similar products that are sold in different pack sizes. Small shops with an internal floor area not exceeding 280m2 are currently exempt from unit pricing.

A consultation document on amending the European Directive, which sets out how prices should be displayed in shops, including unit pricing, has been published by the Department of Trade and Industry this week. A copy of the consultation is available on the DTI website or from the DTI (tel 020 7215 0335). Responses to the consultation are required by 30 September.
