Kingston seeks pharmacy degreeKingston University, Kingston-upon-Thames, south west London, is seeking to have a pharmacy degree accredited by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Dr William Bland, head of the school of chemical and pharmaceutical sciences at Kingston, confirmed that the university was seeking accreditation for a masters degree in pharmacy (MPharm). "We have a lot of established expertise in areas related to pharmacy," he said. The school recently appointed Professor John Brown, formerly deputy head of the Bradford school of pharmacy, as professor of pharmacy. The course is to be run in conjunction with the medical school at St George's Hospital, Tooting, London, which will undertake part of the teaching. "We have a good potential recruitment area in south west London," Dr Bland added. The university has run a masters degree in pharmaceutical science for around eight years. This course covers pharmaceutical sciences, medicinal chemistry, drug design and issues surrounding legislation, ethics and marketing of pharmaceutical products. The Journal understands that subject to suitable progress with accreditation, the first pharmacy students could be enrolled at Kingston in September 2004. New schools of pharmacy are scheduled to open in September 2003 at Cambridge (Anglia Polytechnic University), Medway (Universities of Kent and Greenwich) and Norwich (University of East Anglia). |
