Director-general for NHS IT appointed

A director general for National Health Service information technology has been appointed. Richard Granger, currently lead client service partner for the Government at Deloitte Consulting will take up his new post later this month.

Key developments for which Mr Granger will be responsible include electronic appointment booking, electronic prescriptions and integrated care records. He will be expected to ensure delivery of the national components and the co-ordination of local implementation. Strategic health authorities will appoint chief information officers to ensure that primary care trusts and NHS trusts implement and use the core IT solutions determined at national level.

Mr Granger has worked on large scale IT projects since 1987, including computerising the social security benefit system and managing the project to introduce congestion charging in London.
