Smoking cessation

Shock tactics

From Mr A. F. Huntley, MRPharmS

You report that a further £20m is being "invested" in smoking cessation clinics in 2002–03 (PJ, 14 September, p348), and doubtless a few millions on advertising etc.

There is no justification whatsoever that another penny is spent. The general public know well the possible consequences of smoking.

A single piece of legislation could make it mandatory that a photograph of a diseased lung appears on every packet of cigarettes or tobacco on sale in the United Kingdom bearing the legend "CANCER — could this be you?"

A. F. Huntley
Bristol
