DoH: Destruction of Controlled Drugs in GP Practices (more)

New witnesses for CD destruction

Senior pharmacists working for primary care trusts have been authorised to witness the destruction of Controlled Drugs in general practitioners' surgeries. Authority to do so was issued by the Secretary of State for Health under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 last week. Previously, health authority medical and pharmaceutical advisers were authorised to witness the destruction of Controlled Drugs, but these positions will no longer exist under changes to the National Health Service in England. The authority applies to England only. The new groups authorised include:

• PCT chief pharmacists or pharmaceutical/prescribing advisers who report directly to the chief executive or a director of a PCT

• Registered medical practitioners appointed to PCT professional executive committees or boards with responsibility for clinical governance or risk management

• PCT medical directors
