For the first time in the history of the British Pharmaceutical Conference, the number of participants has exceeded 1,000.

Between the Conference dates of 23 and 25 September, 1,012 people took the opportunity to attend Conference sessions, figures released by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society show.

A popular part of the Conference was the exhibition, which featured more than 40 stands with demonstrations on scientific and technological development, information technology and pharmacy in practice. Representatives from the pharmaceutical industry and the National Health Service were on hand to answer queries.

The main sponsors of the conference, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck Sharpe & Dohme and Boots, were also well represented at the exhibition.

Also present were representatives of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society who were able to provide participants with information of the Society's plans for continuing professional development, the Society's membership groups and the Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Association. The Pharmaceutical Press was offering discounts on orders taken for publications during the exhibition.

Marshall Davies, the Society's President, said: "We are pleased to have seen and increase in the number of visitors to the Conference. The BPC has brought together the many diverse interests of our profession. Importantly, the Conference has helped to highlight the enormous opportunities that exist for our profession to influence and impact on the future health care agenda."

He added: "We are looking forward to building on the success of BPC at Harrogate in September 2003."
