Exercise slows functional decline

Exercise can reduce the progression of functional decline among physically frail, older people, say researchers.

They randomly assigned 188 people aged 75 years and over to six months of home-based exercise or an educational programme. Disability scores in the exercise and education groups were 2.0 and 3.6 after seven months (P=0.008), respectively, and 2.7 and 4.2 after a year (P=0.02) (New England Journal of Medicine 2002;347:1068).
