Malaria parasite genome crackedThe complete genomic sequence for Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes malaria in humans, has been published this month (Nature 2002;419:498). In addition, the genetic code of the mosquito responsible for delivering the parasite from host to host, Anopheles gambiae, has been sequenced (Science 2002;298:129). Scientists hope these discoveries will accelerate the search for drugs that can combat malaria. |
