Pharmacies in South Wales provide blood pressure testing

Ninety community pharmacies across Pembrokeshire, Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire recently provided free blood pressure testing and follow-up tests to patients as part of Stroke Awareness Week.

Organised by the Pembrokeshire Pharmacy Forum and the Stroke Association, the scheme, which took place last month, follows the success of a similar service provided by community pharmacies in Pembrokeshire during Stroke Awareness Week last year (PJ, 15 September 2001, p342).

This year an extra 60 community pharmacies provided the service and an average of 30–40 patients per pharmacy had their blood pressure tested. According to Jon David, a community pharmacist and secretary of Pembrokeshire Pharmacy Forum, the scheme was a good example of how community pharmacies could be galvanised to provide a unified service (see p562).
