Tribute

Thomas In a tribute to the late Stuart Roy Thomas (See Column 2), MIKE SMITH writes: Stuart Thomas qualified from Nottingham in 1948 and operated Chaplin Bennett Chemist in Totnes from 1952 to 1985.
He was a true community pharmacist, highly respected by his patients, local general practitioners and all in Totnes. He will be remembered as a perfect gentleman.
He was a town councillor, deputy mayor and also played the violin in the local orchestra. He was chairman of Devon Local Pharmaceutical Committee from 1974 to 1986 and the South West representative to the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee from 1979 to 1986. It was my privilege to work with Stuart on the local pharmaceutical committee during this time, and he brought wisdom, fairness and great integrity to the position. Stuart was also past chairman of the Torbay branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, which organised the British Pharmaceutical Conference in Exeter in 1979.
Sadly Stuart did not enjoy good health in the last years of his life but he dealt with this with great courage and fortitude.
My deepest sympathy goes to Eleanor, Katy, Rosalind and the rest of his family, to whom he was devoted.
WILLIAM RUCKER writes: I write to pay tribute to Stuart Thomas of Totnes who died in a nursing home recently, after a long and distressing illness. He had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for some years. Stuart was the epitome of all that is good about local community pharmacists. Born in Totnes, he did his apprenticeship in Totnes and went on to work in his business which traded as Chaplin Bennett Chemists for the whole of his long service in pharmacy. His was the pharmacy that was open the longest hours, provided the finest service and knew all the patients best. He was a true ethical and professional pharmacist recognised by the medical profession in the town for his knowledge and dedication. He was always willing to take more than his share of the arduous committee work that is required in the National Health Service and for a long time was chairman of the Devon Local Pharmaceutical Committee. He was also a member of the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee for many years. He served the Torbay branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in most posts including chairman, and was vice-chairman of the committee that organised the British Pharmaceutical Conference at Exeter. He certainly deserved his fellowship of the Society for all the work he did.
Stuart was a well-rounded individual with many interests outside pharmacy. As a young man he joined the Round Table organisation and made many friends. He reached the position of area chairman for Devon and Cornwall. Following that he joined the Totnes Rotary Club and was a member for many years. It is significant that in business and in relaxation he devoted his life to the service of the community of Totnes. Many will miss him and many will remember him for years to come.
