Treatment for severe sepsis in adults launched

A new agent, drotrecogin alfa (Xigris), for the treatment of adult patients with severe sepsis and multiple organ failure has been launched by Eli Lilly (see p602).

Drotrecogin alfa is a recombinant version of the human activated protein C molecule, a regulator of coagulation, and is indicated for use in addition to best standard care, including adequate antibiotics and supportive treatment (fluids, inotropes, vasopressors and support of failing organs, as required).

Activated protein C limits thrombin formation by inactivating Factors Va and VIIIa, thereby providing negative feedback regulation of coagulation. It is a modulator of the systemic response to infection and has both antithrombotic and profibrinolytic properties. Drotrecogin alfa has similar properties to those of human activated protein C.
