Alternative to penicillin for erysipelasPristinamycin, an antimicrobial active against Streptococcus pyogenes, could be an alternative to a regimen of intravenous and then oral penicillin for the treatment of erysipelas, an acute superficial cellulitis, researchers report. After 14 days of treatment, the cure rate was 81 per cent with pristinamycin (n=102) and 67 per cent with penicillin (n=102) (BMJ 2002;325:864). |
