Community pharmacists

Develop links with psychiatry

From Ms Marian Nasr, MRPharmS, and Dr J. Guirguis, MRCPsych

We are concerned about the lack of strong collaboration between community psychiatry and community pharmacy.

With the evolution of community mental health services, community psychiatry has successfully established strong ties with many community initiatives and organisations. However, the situation appears different with community pharmacy and the link remains relatively weak with this resourceful sector.

It is time for community pharmacy to take the lead and identify means of building up constructive links with local psychiatric services and its numerous divisions. Such a move will undoubtedly be rewarding to all parties, especially patients.

Joseph Guirguis
