Tribute

Lucas-Smith In a tribute to the late Enid Lucas-Smith, Dr JOHN HUNT writes: I was sorry to learn of the death of Enid Lucas-Smith, who was a friend for many years, dating back to the time when we were both members of the Slough branch of the Pharmaceutical Society in the 1960s. Apart from running a successful community pharmacy in the Slough area, she was a most active member of the world of pharmacy. A past member of the Society's Council and a familiar figure for decades at the British Pharmaceutical Conference, she was impressive on the History of Pharmacy stand, which she attended with her usual enthusiasm. At meetings and conferences she was always ready to welcome strangers and new members and bring them into the fold.

There were few areas of pharmacy in which Enid did not take an active part. In addition to local branch affairs, she was a past chairman of the Institute of Pharmacy International, of the Women Pharmacists Association and a member of the executive committee of the Faculty of the History and Philosophy of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. Having been treasurer of the British Society for the History of Pharmacy for some years she was elected president in, I think, her 80the year, although she was always reticent about her age. Unfortunately this role came late, even for Enid, and shortly after taking office she had a serious fall which resulted in a fracture, following which she never recovered full health, although she took the chair at the annual BSHP conference that year.

Pharmacy is a business which makes heavy demands on its members and it is a relatively small proportion of the total membership who find the time, energy and enthusiasm to pursue the professional life of the Society, its local branch activities, conferences and its associated societies and institutions. Few pharmacists contributed more to these aspects of the profession than did Enid Lucas-Smith.

Morrison The late Alfred Noel Morrison (PJ, 19 October, p586) was well known to pharmacists in Northern Ireland for many years as the manager of the local Vestric branch. He was one of the early pharmacists in Northern Ireland to qualify through the degree route, gaining a BSc from Queen's University, Belfast, in 1944. He completed his apprenticeship at Bob Scott's pharmacy in the university area of the city.

After registering he moved to England, working first in pharmacies in the London area and later travelling widely as a representative for British Drug Houses (BDH). In 1959 he returned to Northern Ireland as manager of the new Evans Medical wholesale and manufacturing facility in Belfast. Following rapid growth, the business later transferred to its present site at Prince Regent Road, as part of the Vestric (now AAH) group. Mr Morrison held the post of manager until his retirement in 1987.

In addition to his business role, he was a council member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland for a number of years. In 1969, when the British Pharmaceutical Conference was last held in Belfast, he was honorary secretary of the local organising committee
