Alcohol intake during pregnancy

Even moderate alcohol intake during pregnancy could lead to behavioural and physiological problems in offspring, a study using rodents has suggested.

Researchers found that long-lasting alterations in spatial learning occurred in the offspring of rats who had a peak blood alcohol concentration of 30mg/dL during pregnancy.

A woman of average weight can reach this level after having just two drinks over a 1.5 hour period, they say (Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research 2002;26:1752).
