Thalidomide and myeloma

Thalidomide plus dexamethasone is a feasible regimen in the treatment of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, a new study shows.

Researchers studied the combination of 200mg daily of thalidomide plus dexamethasone in 50 patients and conclude that the response rate to induction therapy with the combination is similar to that expected with a regimen of vincristine, doxorubicin and dexamethasone.

They warn that doses of thalidomide of more than 200mg daily in combination with high-dose dexamethasone might be toxic (Journal of Clinical Oncology 2002;20:4319).
